Noise-Activated Camera Trial in Bayside

Noise-activated cameras, the first in Australia, have been installed in Brighton-Le-Sands as part of a 12-month trial to deter hooning.

Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall and the Hon Steve Kamper Member for Rockdale were at Brighton when the cameras were switched on for the start of the trial.

The noise cameras are a joint trial between the EPA, Bayside Council, Police and Transport for NSW.
The two noise cameras operating in Bayside will be moved to hotspots around the area throughout the trial period.

The noise cameras record audio and video of noisy vehicles and use advanced microphone technology to identify the vehicle and how loud it is.

Video and audio recordings are automatically sent to the camera operators and police for further action.

Fines will not be issued during the trial period which ends in December 2025 but a review will help determine if the cameras can be used for regulatory purposes in the future.

The SoundVue Noise Camera System, used in London and New York, has been supplied by UK company Intelligent Instruments.

Bayside Mayor Edward McDougall said:

"This is fantastic news for Bayside. We have been lobbying for this for a long time,” Mayor Edward McDougall said.

"With speed cameras and now the noise camera trial it goes to show that our concerns about car hoons are being taken seriously by the State Government.”
