Housing strategy

The Bayside Local Housing Strategy is our plan to deliver housing to accommodate the needs of the Bayside community.

We've set a target of 26,021 dwellings by 2036.

We're aiming to meet this target while maintaining neighbourhood character and providing additional access to transport, facilities and services.

The Bayside Local Housing Strategy outlines our vision for housing in Bayside. It explains how we will meet the Eastern City District housing targets.

Our vision

By 2036 Bayside will have transformed its housing supply to include greater housing choice and diversity as well as improved housing affordability, meeting the needs of the diverse and expanding community.

Short term development will be balanced with long term housing need with opportunities retained for higher density development in the longer term if new mass transit is delivered. Growth will be linked to the delivery of improved infrastructure and maintaining local liveability.

Bayside will maintain its status as a great place to live, with a balance of vibrant higher density centres, detached dwellings in a suburban setting and medium density and attached housing that is sympathetic to the existing housing character.

Approvals

We made the strategy available through a public exhibition between 16 September and 14 October 2020. We received 72 submissions, most in support of the draft strategy.

The strategy was adopted by Council on 10 March 2021.

It was then referred to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, who approved the strategy on 30 June 2021.
