Council have collaborated with NSW Police and the local community to establish Alcohol-Free Zones to assist in preventing irresponsible street drinking, alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour in public areas to improve community safety.
Alcohol-free zones are a sign posted area that applies to public roads, footpaths and public carparks within the zone.
Alcohol consumption in these zones is prohibited 24 hours a day.
An Alcohol-free zone provides Police with the authority to tip out or confiscate alcohol and move on people who are drinking irresponsibly and displaying anti-social behaviour.
Alcohol-Free Zones are established by a Council resolution under the Local Government Act 1993. The establishment of an Alcohol-Free Zone includes consultation with police and undertaking public consultation with residents, businesses, community groups and other interested groups.
An Alcohol-free zone may be established for a maximum period of four years.
An Alcohol-free zone can be established on a temporary basis for a ‘special event’ like New Year’s Eve.
Alcohol-Free Zones in the Bayside Council LGA are in effect from 24 August 2023 to 23 August 2027.
An Alcohol-Free Zone can be suspended for a short period of time if there is a festival or special event in that area like the Food and Wine Festival.
If you see people drinking in a Alcohol-Free Zone, contact your local police station.
Please contact Council if you find a sign has been damaged, stolen or defaced.
