SLSNSW Emergency Response Beacons

Bayside Council is partnering with Surf Life Saving New South Wales (SLSNSW) to install two Emergency Response Beacons (ERB) on the Cooks Park foreshore. The ERB will be put in place before the beginning of Summer 2024.

An Emergency Response Beacon (ERB) allows people to contact emergency services if there is an incident in the water. Bayside Council does not have volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards do not patrol.  SLSNSW is rolling out ERB at identified ‘black spot’ locations across the NSW state to assist in lifesaving activities.

The ERB’s are:

• Installed and operated by SLSNSW
• Solar powered
• Helping people to call SLSNSW for help in an emergency

• The ERB allows for beach users to call to alert SLSNSW when there is an emergency. 
• The ERB is connected to the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre (SOC).
• The calls are answered 24 hours, 7 days a week.
• The SOC operator will assist by quickly gather valuable information, issuing instructions, or provide reassurance in an emergency and alerting emergency services.

The ERB is equipped with a video feed which is viewable on any internet connected device and the voice call is directly connected to the State Operations Centre (SOC) in the event of an emergency and from where activation of an emergency response is managed.

A camera fitted to the ERB can be remotely monitored by the SOC to provide operators with situational awareness of the incident. SLSNSW can then respond using a wide range of Support Operations assets, including jet skis, inflatable rescue boats, volunteer callout teams from surf clubs, lifeguards, helicopter, or drone services.

The Emergency Beacons will be placed at two beach fronts within the Bayside Council LGAs.
